Utilization of renewable source of energy
Founded in 1933 under the name of "FORESTRY INSTITUTE" our organization became NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF WOOD in 1992 and now we have about 200 specialists.
Along a more than 70 years of activity the scientific and engineering staff got a wide range and complex experience in coping with all problems with might come-up in the field of forestry and wood working.
The Romanian wood working industry with a design processing capacity of 22 mil. cbm/y ranging from sawmills to furniture factories was concerned and designed by the specialists between 1960-1985.
Now, during the transition period, the Institute helps to restructuring of Romanian wood industry through appraisal and diagnosis studies, prefeasibility and feasibility studies and complete technical economic reports, technical assistance, consulting and know-how in wood based products manufacture. The National Institute of Wood is deeply involved in the very difficult and complex process of changing the basis of all economic activity in this important sector of Romanian industry.
One of the most important field of activity of our Institute is the utilities and installations sector and in this framework the energy supply and environmental protection in make up a major part of our activity.
More than 250 boiler plants working with wood fuel was designed of our specialists. In the context of White Paper of European Commission regarding renewable source of energy the preoccupation of our Institute for the utilization of biomass for energy generation are increasing, the National Institute of Wood becoming a major player in this field.
The Romanian biomass potential is about 6675 thou toe and average consumption is about 4500 thou toe. This consumption is about 6,5% of total Romanian energy consumption.
The consumption of biomass as energy source in Romanian is:
All amount of agriculture residues and more than 80 % of wood fuel are used in old and unefficient installation.
In this period our main objectives are to modernize existing installations to increase the utilization of biomass including for power generation and to improve the management of biomass resources all these three objectives in the conditions of environmental protection.
In order to achieve these objectives our Institute worked and work in the framework of different international programmes.
Thus during the last five years we have worked in PHARE Programme (for strategy of renewable sources, demoproject for district heating based on wood residues in Campeni Town, for energy audits in wood working companies, etc.) in the framework of EUREKA (for solving the industrial sludge problem through utilization of mixture sludge - biomass as fuel for energy generation in COST Programme and now we are working in the FO V Programme (Improving the acceptability of RES in Romanian Wood Industry, for Energy Production through an Appropriate Management), and in bilateral work programme (with Dutch and Danish Government).
We would like to develop our contribution in the field of biomass energy source and in order to achieve this target we would be happy to cooperate with any interested organization.
